MAP the SYSTEM Application
Dear Students,
We are pleased to announce the opening of applications for the King’s Systems Thinking & Map the System Programme 2026–2027.
This programme is designed to help students develop the ability to understand complex social, environmental, economic, and institutional challenges through a systems-thinking approach. Rather than beginning with solutions, students will learn how to explore problems, understand different perspectives, conduct research, map systems, examine relationships and power, and identify possible pathways for meaningful change.

The programme will run from September 2026 to July 2027 and will provide a structured learning-to-competition pathway:
- September–October 2026: Systems-thinking foundations and problem exploration
- November 2026: Mini-Challenge, practice and team formation
- December 2026–January 2027: Research, systems mapping, power and solution-landscape analysis
- February–March 2027: Competition Lab, mentoring, research and presentation preparation
- April 2027: King’s Map the System Competition
- May–July 2027: Preparation for the global Map the System pathway, subject to the official 2027 competition calendar and nomination process
Students will have opportunities to work with faculty mentors, external experts and practitioners, develop research and systems-mapping skills, and receive support in storytelling, visual communication and presentation.
Who should apply?
We welcome students who:
- Are curious about complex problems and want to understand them more deeply.
- Are interested in research, social change, innovation, entrepreneurship, policy, sustainability or community issues.
- Are willing to work collaboratively with students from different programmes and perspectives.
- Can commit to regular sessions, research activities, teamwork, and competition milestones.
You do not need to have a team or a final topic at the time of application. You may apply individually, explore problems during the learning phase, and form teams later. Students who already have a possible team or topic are also welcome to apply.
What you will gain
By participating, you will develop practical skills in:
Systems Thinking | Research | Problem Framing | Stakeholder Analysis | Systems Mapping | Power Analysis | Storytelling | Visual Communication | Presentation & Q&A
Students who complete the programme will also receive recognition for their participation and learning. Selected teams will have the opportunity to compete in the King’s Map the System Competition, with the winning team entering the global pathway, subject to the official competition rules and nomination process.
Applications are now open; Registration deadline: Sept 25, 2026.
We encourage students who are genuinely interested in learning how to understand complex problems differently—not simply participating in a competition—to apply.

After raising the ticket, you will receive an email confirmation with the ticket tracking ID. After the ticket is reviewed and responded to by the Academic Team, you will receive another email. If you have not received any email in your inbox after raising the ticket, kindly check your spam folder.
In case of no confirmation email, kindly check the status of your ticket through "View existing tickets".
